The Paper

The Paper is one of five bronze statues in downtown Stillwater created by the artist Bronzeman.

Before cell phones, people read newspapers to get their news! The Stillwater News Press started in 1941, but newspapers in Stillwater go back to 1892. Come to the Stillwater History Museum to see newspapers from long ago!

= ASK: The man is sitting in front of the Stillwater Municipal Building. What happens there?

Y = YAY: What is your favorite thing to do in Stillwater?

"I Spy" is a great activity for children of all ages. here are some ideas of things to find!

o   I Spy a man reading. Do you see his shoes? How do they fasten?

o   Do you see his pants?  How many pockets do they have?

o   I Spy a newspaper.  What is the man reading about?

o   I Spy a bench.  Do you see something fancy about it? Can you find a knothole?

Point to and name the statue’s eyes, nose, hair, and other features, then point to and name your baby’s features.

Talk about what the man is doing. “He is reading a newspaper.” or “Look at his shoes!”

Is your child interested in a particular part of the statue? Talk about what catches their attention first. “He is reading the newspaper, just like we read books together.”

Introduce the word “statue.” Talk about the different textures you notice, such as smooth, rough, hard, or soft.

This man is reading a newspaper while sitting with one leg crossed. Could you read a paper in other positions? Let’s act them out! Could you lie on your back and read? Could you stand and read?

He is reading near the police station. Police officers are community helpers. Make up a story about a police officer helping a friend.
