Rural Oklahoma Mural

This mural at the corner of 8th and Main was created by artist Austin Woodliff with spray paint on brick. It was completed in September of 2023. The artist donated his time for this mural and the supplies were paid for by ProValue.Net via a TIF Grant awarded by the city of Stillwater under the Stillwater (Re) Investment Plan.

Can you find a silo in the mural? A silo is a tall, round building used to store grain, like wheat or corn.

The second oldest business in Stillwater is the Stillwater Milling Company, from 1891. A milling company takes grain from silos and grinds it into flour. People use that flour to make bread, pasta, and other tasty foods!

P = POINT OUT: Can you find two tiny windows in the barn? What could you see from up there?

L = LAUGH: Can you hop on one foot from the house to the barn while you moo like a cow?

= ASK: Why is there a radio tower beaming a signal to the satellite dish?

Y = YAY: Say thanks to farmers! They grow food and raise animals for all of us.

"I Spy" is a great activity for children of all ages. here are some ideas of things to find!

o   I Spy COLORS! Do you see something blue? red? brown? green?

o   I Spy doors. How many doors do you see?

o   Do you see any lights in the buildings?  Who do you think is there?

o   Can you find a Silo?  What is stored in a silo?

o   Can you find a tank that holds gas?  Hint--it’s by the barn

Watch your baby to see what draws their attention first. Talk about what they notice.
“This picture is very colorful. I see green, red, and yellow!”

Point to the different things in the mural and name them: clouds, sky, grass, house.

Is your child interested in a particular part of the mural? Talk about what catches their attention first. “I see something green. Can you find it?”

Point to the different buildings and talk about who would live in them. “Who lives in a barn?” “What do they eat?” “Who takes care of them on the farm?”

Count things together. “Let’s count the windows!”

This is a picture of a farm in rural Oklahoma. What animals might you see on the farm?

Do you know the song “Old McDonald has a farm”? Sing the song with the animals you might see!

Talk about whether the animals walk on two or four legs. If the animals walk on two legs, jump twice; if they walk with four legs, jump four times!
